TWO EVENINGS – Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution, Documentary and Discussion

In this two-part session, participants will watch “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution” and engage in discussion groups to unpack the many ways ableism influences our world and how those perspectives inform our behaviors, attitudes and policy decisions. The documentary tells the story of a group of teens who found each other and went on to become disability rights activists who worked together to change public policy and laws that continue to shape our institutions today, including public education.

“Camp Jened – a ramshackle hippie-run summer camp ‘for the handicapped,’ (a term no longer used) was an environment where people with disabilities were treated as equal members of a community, empowered to make their own decisions, and experienced for the first time the fullness of themselves as human beings. Our hope is that your discussions will spark new thoughts, new behaviors, new actions – and that truly special sense of community that binds us together and lifts us up as one.” – DIRECTORS’ NOTE FROM JIM LEBRECHT AND NICOLE NEWNHAM
