This week (specifically Monday, March 3) marks 133 years of the Idaho Education Association (IEA). Since 1892, IEA has worked tirelessly to support and empower Idaho’s educators — advocating for fair wages, strong benefits, respect in the profession and better working and learning conditions for all.
“What an extraordinary legacy IEA members have — a legacy nearly as old as our beautiful state,” said IEA President Layne McInelly. “At no point in our modern history has that legacy and the commitment of IEA members been more important. Our union stands on the right side of history as a bulwark protecting public education from those who would dismantle it. We will not stop now.”
IEA members can be found in virtually every school building across Idaho, standing together for the good of students and their profession. Whether you are a teacher, school counselor, bus driver, food service worker, aspiring educator or retired teacher, you are part of a legacy that has shaped public education in Idaho for over a century.
A Legacy of Advocacy and Impact
Since IEA’s founding, members have fought for fair wages, strong benefits, professional respect and the resources educators need to do their jobs well. Whether it’s pushing for higher salaries, ensuring access to quality healthcare, securing legal protections or advocating for policy changes in the state legislature, IEA members have always been Idaho’s leading voice for public educators.
But IEA is more than advocacy — it’s a community. Members form a powerful network, offering mentorship, professional development, leadership training and a collective strength that makes a real difference in Idaho schools and classrooms.
“As we reflect on 133 years of progress, we also look ahead to the challenges and opportunities that lie before us,” McInelly said “Together, we will continue to advocate, educate and elevate the profession for generations to come.”
