Representation: The IEA Resolutions Committee is designed to include a member from every region.
Creation and governance: The committee just celebrated its 133rd birthday. It was formed at the first-ever convention of what was then known as the Idaho State Teachers Association; members used the committee to recommend higher standards for teaching certificates and the creation of a teacher training school. Greg Felton is the current chair.
What the committee does: The Resolutions Committee serves as the voice of Idaho educators by drafting and reviewing formal expressions that articulate the union’s positions clearly.
At its biannual meetings, the committee considers resolutions regarding everything from policy positions to collective advocacy to member priorities. It also reviews resolutions from the National Education Association and considers them for inclusion in IEA’s own statewide resolutions document.
Based on these painstaking reviews, the committee recommends revisions, deletions, or additions to the current set of resolutions. These proposed changes are then presented at the IEA’s annual Delegate Assembly, where they undergo debate and potential adoption by the larger body.
Through this deliberative process, the committee ensures the union’s positions remain relevant, responsive, and reflective of the evolving needs and perspectives of Idaho’s education community.
How you can get involved: IEA members are actively encouraged to participate in shaping the union’s resolutions. Any member can submit proposals for new resolutions or amendments to existing ones by securing the sponsorship of a sitting delegate at Delegate Assembly.
