What they did: Sixty-nine LUPs from around the state received training from IEA staff and their fellow presidents over the course of two days, learning about:

  • The Human Rights Committee
  • Communications best practices
  • Education support professionals
  • Financial training
  • Harassment and discrimination trainings
  • Having difficult conversations
  • Organizing to empower
  • Back-to-school fairs
  • May Matters
  • Membership

Why it matters: The training is designed to help LUPs — whether they’re just stepping into leadership or have been presidents for years — learn best practices. It’s just one of the many trainings available to IEA members who wish to strengthen their skills and discover how best to work with each other and take advantage of the union’s many resources.

Interested in becoming a leader?: The union has several programs to help you hone your skills, whether or not you’re an LUP. Learn more about Growing Engaged Members (GEMs), the Collective Bargaining Council series, Summer Institute, the National Education Association ESP Leadership Institute and many more — talk to your LUP or your region director for more information.
