A Peek Into What Happens Before RA Kicks Off

July 2, 2025

Emily Pearson, left, and Sofia Bronaugh of Aspiring Educators-University of Idaho attended one of the many pre-NEA Representative Assembly gatherings.

The gist: The National Education Association’s Representative Assembly doesn’t officially kick off until July 3, but members of the Idaho Education Association delegation have been in Portland, Ore., for days attending key conferences and networking.

Fun fact: IEA Region Director Stephanie Myers, who coordinates logistics for IEA’s delegation, will spend a whopping 13 days in Portland!

What happens: Many pre-RA gatherings include strategy sessions for the assembly itself — how will members of caucuses introduce their new business items (NBIs) and rally support for them on the floor?

NCUEA: Outgoing Boise Education Association President Lara Luthy and incoming Boise Education Association President Tabitha Miller attended the National Council of Urban Education Associations (NCUEA).

• BEA is one of the largest 200 local unions in the country, which has automatically qualified it for membership in NCUEA. NCUEA is now expanding into suburban areas, not just urban centers, so more local unions from Idaho may soon be able to join.

• Luthy said immigration policies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids were a focus of conversation at this year’s meeting, especially so educators understand their own rights and the rights of students who may be undocumented.

Aspiring Educators: Members of the University of Idaho Aspiring Educators, including the most recent recipient of the IEA Aspiring Educator Award, Emily Pearson, and Sofia Bronaugh, an RA guest attendee, came to Portland to attend the Aspiring Educators Conference.

• The conference allows new educators to network, learn about their profession, and develop new skills. Follow @ui_aspiringed for live updates from RA.

Conference on Racial and Social Justice: Members of IEA’s new LGBTQ+ Caucus, including BEA member John McCrostie, IEA board members Amber Armstrong and Shelia Dengler-Shaw, incoming board member Cassie Horner, and newly elected NEA Director Lindsey Smith attended the Conference on Racial and Social Justice.

• The conference is designed to build community and local power. This is IEA’s LGBTQ+ Caucus’s first time attending.

NEA-Retired Annual Meeting: IEA Retired Council Co-President (and IEA Member Benefits Director) Dick Chilcote and Southwestern Education Association-Retired President Penni Cyr — both former IEA presidents — attended the NEA Retired Annual Meeting.

• The NEA-Retired Annual Meeting provides an invaluable way for retired educators from throughout the country to continue contributing to the business of the National Education Association.
