We believe public education is a true public good that transforms lives and creates a more just and inclusive society making it an indispensable cornerstone of our American democratic republic. Together, we defend the teaching profession and believe public education is strengthened when educators are respected for their contributions to our state and its families.
The best argument for public education in Idaho is the good, simple truth of what happens in our members’ classrooms each and every day.
Layne McInelly,
IEA President and Public School Educator

In all, legislators introduced 890 pieces of legislation this year. For context, in 2022, the Legislature introduced 784.
Many of the bills, such as those tackling prayer in schools, are cut-and-paste legislation from out-of-state think tanks.
"The voices of everyday Idahoans are drowned out by out-of-state big interests. And now, with IEA’s May Matters campaign, the union must work to restore common sense to the Statehouse.” -Matt Compton

🔥 The 2025 Idaho legislative session has finally adjourned — and it will go down as one of the worst for public education in more than a decade, if not in our state’s history.
But we`re not taking it sitting down.
❤️🔥 Last Sunday afternoon, over a thousand Idahoans rallied on the steps of the state Capitol to show the true spirit of our state — one that believes every child is welcome in a public school classroom.
The rally was organized one month after West Ada middle school teacher Sarah Inama was forced to remove inclusive signs from her classroom. The backlash was immediate, and the outpouring of support hasn`t stopped since.
Inama, Cassie Horner and Zoraida Juarez, all proud educators and IEA members, spoke at the rally. Educators, students, parents and neighbors stood shoulder-to-shoulder, holding signs, wearing “Everyone Is Welcome” shirts and lifting each other up.
That’s the kind of leadership, compassion and courage that Idaho’s public school educators bring to Idaho kids every single day.
Now it’s our turn to fight for them.
📢 The legislative session may be over, but our movement is just getting started. We are organizing. We are mobilizing. And we will vote for pro-public education leaders in 2026 and beyond. Learn more about our May Matters campaign at the link in our bio.
