IEA recently joined the Imagine Idaho Foundation’s effort to understand and address hurdles to high-speed internet access in Idaho, especially rural communities.
A coalition of businesses, municipal governments, medical providers and education stakeholders, Imagine Idaho, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is working “to educate, coalesce and leverage community leadership throughout the state to deploy significant federal and state funding for broadband-communications infrastructure in a pro-competitive way to unserved and underserved Idaho.”
The ultimate goal? “Increased broadband access that allows all Idahoans to live, learn and work anywhere in our great state.”
“Each year, access to high-speed internet becomes more important to the success of public education outcomes in Idaho, especially in remote rural communities,” said IEA Associate Executive Director Matt Compton. “By joining forces with the Imagine Idaho coalition, IEA can help build momentum to giving our members and their students better, faster internet access no matter where they live.”
As part of the effort to access up to $1 billion in federal funding for the effort, Imagine Idaho is collecting data on internet speeds and service from round the state.

“We hope our members will take a few minutes of their time to use this safe and secure test of their local internet speed to help provide a clear assessment of broadband need across the state,” Compton said.
The test is quick (less than two minutes) and should be completed from a laptop or desktop computer connected to in-home internet service. Individuals can use their mobile devices to report that they do not have internet service at home. All information collected is confidential and will only include: your location, internet provider, cost of service, and upload and download speeds.
