The IEA Board of Directors has approved and announced the hiring of Matt Aber-Towns as the Association’s Executive Director. Aber-Towns has an extensive background in education association work with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and additional union experience with Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
“I look forward to working alongside a union board and staff that share my values and passion for justice, democracy, public education, education professionals, and the labor movement,” Aber-Towns said.
Aber-Towns spent eight years in management with AFT, serving as Organizing Director for Early Childhood Education and Care, Deputy Director of the Southwest and Mountain Region, and National Representative for Organizing and Field Services. His work on New Mexico’s early childhood campaign received national recognition and in Florida his team oversaw membership growth of 1,100 in the AFT/NEA joint local association in Hillsborough County. His resume also includes extensive experience in training, budgeting, and capacity-building.
Matt attended Delegate Assembly in Coeur d’Alene this week to begin the process of getting to know IEA members and staff. He officially starts in his role as IEA Executive Director April 22.
“Matt will be a great addition to the IEA team and his organizing and leadership skills will help us continue the amazing work we are doing for professional educators, students, and public education around Idaho,” says IEA President Kari Overall. “We’re excited about the energy, passion, and experience he brings to the Association.”
