Over the objections of the Idaho Association of School Administrators, Idaho School Boards Association, Idaho Parent Teacher Association, and the Idaho Education Association, and without any comment from members of the general public, the House Education Committee voted 12-6 to send the third and final plank of the Luna plan to the full House with a recommendation that it do pass.
In comments about SB 1184, Supt. Tom Luna told the House Education Committee this morning that this third year of funding cuts to Idaho public schools represents “the new normal” in our economy and that SB 1184 will, “…give our schools the tools they need to do more with less.”
Following four hours of testimony and discussion, only Reps. Linden Bateman (R-Idaho Falls), Jeff Nesset (R-Lewiston), Tom Trail (R-Moscow), Donna Pence (D-Gooding), Sue Chew (D-Boise), and Brian Cronin (D-Boise) voted against the bill.
SB 1184now moves to the full House; if it passes there, Gov. Otter, a co-sponsor of the legislation, is certain to sign it into law.
Now is the time to contact your representatives and urge them to vote against SB 1184.
