To the casual observer it may appear that the education committees have dealt with very few bills this session. In actuality a significant amount of work has gone into the development of a plethora of education related bills.
IEA to Lawmakers: We Are Representing Our Constituents. In an effort to clarify the IEA’s positions on the individual pieces of education legislation that are now making their way through the committee process, we presented the following remarks to members of the House Education Committee this morning.
Members of the House Education Committee met for several hours this morning to take public testimony on two of the bills sponsored by the school boards association. These two bills are a part of the package of measures the stakeholders have been discussing since early in the session.
According to the schedule, the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee (JFAC) is on track to complete the budget setting process tomorrow. This is usually a sign that the session is nearing an end; once the money is allocated and budgets are set, lawmakers are much less likely to introduce or support a new idea that costs additional money.
At the end of a third day of public testimony and on a party line vote, the Senate State Affairs Committee sent SB 1108, the bill to make it tougher to qualify initiatives or referendum measures for the Idaho ballot, to the floor with a “do pass” recommendation.
