IEA award nominations due January 14

The Idaho Education Association’s Board of Directors  is taking nominations for the organization's annual awards. Winners will be honored at the 2011 Delegate Assembly in April.

Awards include the Friend of Education Award; Sam Cikaitoga Minority Service Award; Edythe Crowe Education Support Professional Award; Shane Anderson Outstanding Member Award; Betty Roper Public Relations Award (Local/Region); Larry Caldwell Advocacy Award; Membership Recruiter Award; Marsha Nakamura Award for Teaching Excellence; and Teacher Trainee Award.

Learn new skills in Post Falls – Friday, January 14, is the deadline to register for a day of great workshops at Post Falls High School on Saturday, January 22. Sessions feature how to be a building rep, rights for Education Support Professionals, becoming a social media mogul, community coalition building, retirement planning, year-round organizing, science projects, and more. Last call for ESP nominations – Monday, January 10, is the deadline to nominate people who'd like to attend the NEA Education Support Professionals conference March 11-13 in Washington, D.C. Earn graduate credits – Registration will be open January 10-28 for the winter classes through the Idaho Education Academy. Work at your own pace from home or school while upgrading your skills and earning graduate credits through Northwest Nazarene University. Classes run through June 12 and are available in PowerPoint, classroom websites, handling difficult students, stress management for teachers, job-hunting skills for teens, K-3 assessment portfolios, and teaching creativity. Innovate much? – The NEA Foundation and U.S. Department of Education have been tapping educators’ brains to identify the nation’s most pressing classroom problems via the Our Challenge to Innovate (C2i) program. You could win $2,500 by submitting a solution to any of these by January 14:

  • How can educators help students learn and use fractions, ratios, and proportions?
  • How can educators involve parents in positive ways to support their children in school?
  • How can educators help students who lack basic literacy skills build a foundation for reading success?
  • How can educators better incorporate student voices in decision making?

The NEA Foundation will offer up to five cash awards of $2,500 for individuals who submit solutions voted most responsive to these problems. To submit your idea and vote on other ideas, go to the US DOE’s Open Innovation Portal.

"GoOn" essay contest – TheIdaho Statesman and JA and Kathryn Albertson Foundation are sponsoring a series of essay contests encouraging Idahoans to "Go On" to post-secondary education. Entries are due January 19 for the current contest, which asks entrants to describe how they plan to "Go On" in the new year to achieve their goals of college or career training after high school. Family Life and Sexual Health Training – The State Department of Education is offering health educator training on the 9-12 Grade F.L.A.S.H. (Family Life and Sexual Health) Curriculum. Two-day training sessions will be held January 25-26, 2011, in Coeur d’Alene and February 8-9, 2011, in Pocatello. Field trip help for Boise-area schools – Thanks to a $1,000 grant from The Whittenberger Foundation, Boise WaterShed is offering a one-time $50 per school busing reimbursement. Reimbursements will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to area schools visiting the Boise WaterShed for the first time, with Title One schools receiving preference. 2011 Title I Biennial Conference  – “The Next Generation of Learners: Catching their Dreams” is the theme forIdaho’s next biennial Title I Conference scheduled for April 6-8, 2011, at the Boise Centre.
